Chopper (6)
Chopper examines the notion of form countering function through a group of sculptures that take their aesthetic cues from motorcycle fabrication techniques. These abstract sculptures are currently in progress. The sculptures feature elements that resemble mechanical components of motorcycles, such as gas tanks and handle bars, but are objects that cannot function as vehicles. Chromed exhaust pipes collide with transmissions, and fenders twist into fluid shapes slicing through space. These objects are an attempt to restructure the idea of a motorcycle based on aesthetic principles without concern for function - these forms exist as basic signifiers of speed, power and sensuality. Within these objects craftsmanship is of primary importance, as the components need to be flawless in appearance in order for the sculptures to fluidly shift back and forth from appearing as objects of function to objects of pure aesthetics. Elements of these sculptures are being professionally finished with chrome and custom automotive paint, complete with racing pin stripes and air brushed details. In these sculptures stock motorcycle parts commingle with custom fabricated elements, balanced within unweilding constructions that result in volumes that pulse with sensuality and fetishism. These hybrid objects are suggestive of speed and volume, like a glimpse of a mechanical comet as it hurtles, disintegrating through space. The tension of these sculptures suggest not so much a vehicle ready to propel itself on the open road, but an object struggling to dislodge itself from the self referencing language of forms from which it originates. These sculptures are the love child of 60’s abstract sculpture and custom motorcycle culture.
